Easily determine quantities - How does a counting scale work?

Counting scales – Simply count with a scale

Anyone who stores, packages, or sells many similar small parts—such as screws, nuts, electronic components, or other small parts—knows how tedious manual counting can be. This is where counting scales come in: They not only save time but also offer a precise and efficient solution for counting pieces. But how does a counting scale actually work?

Counting with a scale – The basics

Counting scales don't primarily work with weight, but rather use it to calculate the number of pieces . The key factor here is the so-called reference weight —the average weight of a single piece.

What is the reference weight?

The reference weight is determined by weighing a defined number of parts. The scale's indicator calculates the average. This number is called the reference quantity . Typically, approximately 10 parts are used; if the weight of the parts fluctuates significantly, a higher quantity is recommended for more precise results.

Attention: The smaller the reference weight or the reference quantity, the higher the error potential.

Example: If a screw nominally weighs 2.5 g, but actually varies between 2.475 g and 2.525 g depending on production, this can result in a deviation of ±10 pieces for 1000 counted parts.

How to count with a counting scale

Using the 83sigma evaluation device as an example, we show how the counting process works:

1. Determine reference weight

Before counting can begin, the reference weight must be known:

  1. Choose a weighing platform with the finest division.

  2. Check zero setting, if necessary reset scale to zero.

  3. Place the empty container and tare it.

  4. Insert a known number of pieces.

  5. Enter this number using the keyboard.

  6. Press the function key to determine the reference weight.

Now the main display shows the number of pieces , the secondary display shows the total weight and the calculated individual weight .

Tip: The 83sigma also allows you to optimize the reference weight. Trend arrows indicate whether additional parts should be added or removed to create a more accurate baseline.

2. Alternatively: Enter reference weight manually

If the average weight is already known, it can be entered directly. This saves time but is less accurate because optimization is not possible.

Counting – How the process works

Once the reference weight is determined, the actual counting can begin:

  1. Zero the scale (including removing any taring).

  2. Check or enter reference weight again.

  3. Optional: Perform optimization.

  4. Place all the pieces to be counted.

The scale will now automatically display the piece count in the main display. The total weight and the reference weight per piece will appear in the secondary display.

Counting weighing systems:

The combination of a bulk and reference scale with a display unit guarantees extremely accurate counting results. In the following video, the 8-036 counting and weighing system first determines the reference weight using the reference scale. Counting then takes place on the bulk scale.

Extras & Extensions

The counting scales with the 83sigma, 84vario and 82 series indicators offer additional functions:

  • Connection of scanners or USB sticks for item recording and documentation.

  • Data export for Excel : Ideal for warehouse management or accounting.

  • Combination with target weighing function : Particularly helpful when filling fixed quantities (e.g. 1000 screws per bag).

Counting systems can also be set up – for example with a precise reference scale for determining individual pieces and a large quantity scale for large batches.

Conclusion: Counting scales save time and nerves

Whether in warehousing, shipping, or production – counting scales are an essential part of modern goods management. They automate counting, reduce errors, and simultaneously enable documentation via USB or software interface.

With our compact counting scales or a combination of weighing bridges and the 83sigma, 84vario, or 82 series indicators, you will find the right solution for every requirement – from compact workstation devices to fully automatic counting systems.
