Anyone who stores, packages, or sells large quantities of identical small parts – such as screws, nuts, electronic components, or other hardware – knows how tedious manual counting can be. This is exactly where counting scales come into play: they not only save time but also offer a precise and efficient solution for determining quantity. But how does a counting scale actually work?

Counting with a scale – The basics

Counting scales do not primarily work with weight, but rather use weight to calculate the piece count. The decisive factor here is the so-called reference weight – i.e., the average weight of a single part.

What is the reference weight?

The reference weight is determined by weighing a defined number of parts. The scale's evaluation unit uses this to calculate the average. This number is known as the reference quantity. By default, about 10 parts are used; for parts with highly fluctuating weights, a higher quantity is recommended for more precise results.

Caution: The lower the reference weight or the reference quantity, the higher the potential for error.

Example: If a screw nominally weighs 2.5 g, but in reality fluctuates between 2.475 g and 2.525 g depending on production, this can result in a deviation of ±10 pieces when counting 1000 parts.

How counting with a counting scale works

Using the 83sigma evaluation unit as an example, we show how the counting process works:

1. Determine the reference weight

Before counting can begin, the reference weight must be known:

1. Select a weighing bridge with the finest resolution.

2. Check zero setting; set the scale to zero if necessary.

3. Place an empty container on the scale and tare it.

4. Place a known number of parts on the scale.

5. Enter this number using the keypad.

6. Trigger the function key to determine the reference weight.

Now the main display shows the piece count, the second display the total weight, and the calculated unit weight.

Tip: The 83sigma also allows for an optimization of the reference weight. Using trend arrows, it indicates whether more parts should be added or removed to create a more accurate basis.

2. Alternatively: Enter reference weight manually

If the average weight is already known, it can be entered directly. This saves time but is less accurate, as no optimization is possible.

Counting – How the process works

Once the reference weight has been set, the actual counting can begin:

1. Set the scale to zero (including removing any tares).

2. Check or re-enter the reference weight.

3. Optional: Perform optimization.

4. Place all parts to be counted on the scale.

Now the scale automatically shows the piece count on the main display. The total weight and the reference weight per part appear on the second display.

Counting systems:

The combination of a quantity scale and a reference scale with an evaluation unit guarantees extremely accurate counting results. In the following video, the Counting Scale System 8-036 is used to first determine the reference weight with the reference scale. Subsequently, counting is performed on the quantity scale.
